15 years of baking, one family's journey into building Mariyam's Kitchen as an outlet in Thaiyur, Senganmal, OMR.
23rd August 2026
There are business that begins with a plan, and then there are businesses that begins with a recipe...
Mariyam's Kitchen follows the latter.
Today, our shop sits on Neethimozhi Complex, OMR, right outside Akshaya Today apartments, beside Thaiyur Food Street in Senganmal.
A small family-run bakery and food business, open every day for people looking for fresh cakes, brownies, cookies, traditional sweets, nuts, dried fruits, and a growing selection of things made with the same principle that started it all:
Make good food, make it fresh, and make it with care.

Around 15 years ago, Ayesha Mariyam began her home-baking journey with something rather special: Sooji Adai, a traditional sweet whose recipe has been passed down through generations in the family.
Not the kind that you find everywhere.
Made with semolina, ghee and condensed milk prepared in-house, Sooji Adai takes hours to make. It is rich, dense, sweet and filling. Visually resembling a cake, but one bite tells you otherwise.
For the family, it was something more than a cake, worth preserving.
During early years, Sooji Adai was primarily made from home for people who knew about it and wanted it.
Over time, however, the kitchen grew into something more. Cakes, Brownies, Cookies and other baked goods gradually became part of the journey.
What began with one traditional recipe eventually became a much wider repertoire, eventually becoming Mariyam's Kitchen
For our founder Ayesha Mariyam, food has always meant hospitality and purity.
In local neighborhoods, the name "Mariyam" became synonymous with authentic home-cooked delicacies, prepared fresh upon order without artificial preservatives or shelf-life shortcuts.
Over time, requests expanded beyond traditional sweets to artisanal brownies, cookies, and custom celebration cakes.
As demand grew, relying solely on home delivery limited reach. Opening a physical storefront became the natural evolution to offer a single, reliable hub for customers across the Chennai tech corridor.
Our shop location, right outside Akshaya Today apartments and adjacent to Thaiyur Food Street in Senganmal, sits strategically along the OMR arterial route, positioned near IT hubs like Sholinganallur, Navalur, and Thiruporur.
Mariyam's Kitchen connects corporate professionals and local families with handcrafted baked goods.
The launch marked a transition driven by sheer determination to share uncompromised food standards with a wider community.
On Sunday, August 23, 2026, at 11:00 AM, Mariyam's Kitchen officially opened its doors to customers.
Surrounded by family, friends, and supportive neighbors, the shop was inaugurated with the help of the local Vanigar Sangam association, who honored the occasion with a gift of a wall clock, something that has stayed with the shop as a small reminder of the people who helped welcome it into the neighbourhood.
With this progression, opening the shop brought in two feelings: Happiness being the key element now, reminiscing the struggles faced during our journey, and determination because opening a shop did not mean we crossed the finish line. It is the point where the real work begins.
The goal was never to put up a sign board outside and start selling goods, rather introduce people to the delicacies Mariyam's Kitchen produces, earn their trust, and have them return as they already know about the quality of the goods provided.
Mariyam's Kitchen balances heirloom recipes with modern artisanal baking:
Classic Gourmet Brownies: Classic chocolate brownies rank as the top seller, lauded for their dense, fudgy core 🍫. Variations include Walnut, Peanut Butter, Hazelnut, and Nutella.
Ragi Brownies: A proprietary health-conscious creation, made using 100% ragi (finger millet) flour and brown sugar, even incorporating ragi for dusting. It delivers a rich, chocolatey finish while retaining a delectable texture without gluten.
Fresh Cream & Buttercream Cakes: Cake-in-a-box by the retail in different flavors or custom cakes crafted for birthdays and events, all using fresh ingredients, intentionally avoiding fondant to prioritize taste and quality.
Artisanal Pantry Goods: Multi-floral honey, dehydrated fruit and vegetable chips, millet cookies, dry fruits, and seasonal holiday specialties like German Stollen, Plum Cake, and Love Cake.
Operating as a tight family initiative. Ayesha Mariyam leads as primary chef and master baker, supported directly by her husband, son, and daughter in daily operations, customer service, and logistics.
Daily shop operations run from 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM (Mondays 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM). Ideal time to buy your bite!
Every morning begins with preparing fresh cookie batches, organizing custom cake orders, and setting up the display for walk-in guests.
Time flies by, the first two months have been slow with steady building and persistence. Operating an independent bakery in an unfamiliar commercial landscape brings genuine financial pressure and long hours. The shop is still getting known. Not an overnight success story, rather an honest version of how a small local business grows. People are yet to discover the shop, try the food, remember the name, spread the word, and eventually come back to us.
Yet, customer feedback reflects the care poured into every batch, with patrons highlighting rich flavor, consistent quality, and immaculate packaging, we just need the numbers to grow; we are also now established on Google Maps, making it easier for people in and around the locality to find us.
One of the more valuable lessons, however, has nothing to do with the food - it had been the neighboring businesses. The support and friendliness of shops around us has made the experience of becoming a part of the local business community a little easier. For a new shop, that matters a lot.
Looking ahead, Mariyam's Kitchen aims to expand into corporate catering, secure a larger dedicated production facility, and establish itself as a mainstay across OMR.
Mariyam's Kitchen is ultimately about hospitality. It is about putting food in front of someone and hoping they enjoy it. It is about taking an old family recipe and allowing it to meet a new generation. It is about making a brownie that someone comes back for. It is about a cake ordered for someone's birthday. It is about a box of cookies taken home for a family. It is about someone discovering Sooji Adai for the first time and asking what it is. And perhaps most importantly, about creating a livelihood through something we genuinely enjoy making.
We have not opened Mariyam's Kitchen because the road ahead was guaranteed. There are still plenty of things we are figuring out. The business is young, the customer base is still growing, and every day brings another lesson.
But behind the counter, the intention remains simple: make good food. keep the quality consistent. treat people well. and keep getting better.
The next stage for us is not about trying to become everything to everyone. It is about understanding the people around us better.
What do families in the area order most? What do nearby businesses need? What foods do people want for celebrations? What works for corporate orders? What should we make more of? What should we introduce next? These are questions we are still answering currently.
There are plans being explored around expanding our catering capabilities, developing a dedicated kitchen and eventually becoming a more established food provider for corporates, clients and larger orders.
For now, the focus is on learning the locality, understanding our customers and building our foundation solid.
Thank you.
To everyone who has supported us in the past and will do so in the future
To everyone who visited during these first two months, ordered something, recommended us to a friend, left feedback, found us on Google, came back for another brownie, or simply stopped by to see what we are about:
Thank you for giving Mariyam's Kitchen a chance. 💝
Please visit us again. Bring your family. Try something you have never had before.
The doors are open for all and always. The kitchen is working and bringing your latest and sweetest. And there is still plenty more to explore.
~Ayesha and Family.
